Learn about the native plants that grow along the American River Parkway and around Folsom Lake. Did you know that native plants can often support 10 to 50 times as many species of native wildlife as non-native? Or that the original American people used over 2,000 native plants for medicinal purposes? It makes sense to use plants in gardens and landscaping that have naturally adapted to local climate, water availability, soils and wildlife. They generally prefer little to no fertilizer, less water and take less effort in controlling pests than non-native plants. Create a healthy habitat for yourself and critters using plants that benefit wildlife, use less water and little to no pesticides or herbicides.
