Start your morning off with a pleasant walk around American River Ranch. We will experience a variety of resident birds along with winter, migrant, or summer birds depending on the season. Cliff will point out other critters and plant life along the way. This walk is ideal for beginner to intermediate birdwatchers.

Experience the secret life of honey bees at American River Ranch. You will learn how bees are vital to our environment and how they live together and function. After talking about how bees and pollination help the farm, you will put on a beekeeping suit and see the bees up close and personal inside the hive. You will see worker bees doing their jobs, how honey is made, the famous waggle dance and maybe even spot the queen bee. Then you’ll enjoy a sample of honey made by the bees you just visited. Suggested ages 8 years and older. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes, long pants and socks that cover their ankles. Avoid wearing any heavily scented skin or hair products.

Our 60-minute outdoor yoga class is held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 am. The classes will be breath work and intentional movement. It’s open to all levels. Please register in advance. Drop-ins are welcome as space permits (cash only). Bring your own mat and water bottle. We have yoga mats available for those who do not have their own.

We begin our focus on developing functional breathing patterns in myofascial release work with small portable equipment such as foam rollers and balls. Core strength, flexibility, and coordination are also further explored. These mat-based therapeutic exercise and myofascial release classes are designed to increase functional movement patterns, improve posture, stability, balance, increase lung capacity, and develop core strength.

You will learn to work the deep musculature of the body to stabilize and support the spine by combining intrinsic awareness and activation; as well as uses of small portable equipment such as various therapy balls, stability trainer, and foam rollers, miracle balls.

These classes are adapted for all levels of fitness, with tools such as foam rollers and balls in various densities. Preregistration is encouraged to guarantee your spot in class. However, we will accept drop-ins as space permits. Bring a yoga mat to class.

Join Candis and her team in learning the basics of Western Herbology while integrating it with Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicine. This six-month course will include medicine-making, plant ID, how to treat acute ailments, use of tonic herbs and food for strengthening vitality, as well as how to harvest local herbs for medicine. You will learn about your own constitutional needs and ways to balance yourself for better health and well-being. This program will include herb walks around the farm and the American River. There will be lots of tasting, smelling, and hands-on experience with the herbs!

Check out the next Knife Skills class scheduled for May 28. Better Knife skills will improve your cooking beyond measure. There’s so much more than just slicing and dicing, and with proper knife techniques, prepping will be easier and quicker. In this hands on class, you’ll learn the basics, plus simple and beautiful garnishes. Learn how to choose a good knife without spending a fortune, and how to keep your knives sharp and well cared for. You’ll leave with recipes and a bounty of chopped produce ready to turn into dinners for the week. Please bring a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a cutting board to class.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Tiger Eye, Peruano, Orca, Anasazi, and Arikara are just a few of the hundreds of heirloom bean varieties. Healthy, sustainable, and socially responsible, heirloom beans are available in any season. Knowing which beans to pick and how to cook them can make an old bean recipe shine. In this demonstration class, we will explore the myriad types of heirloom beans that are available and learn how to use them in cooking. We will taste a variety of heirlooms and talk about history, flavor, and recipes. Participants will learn how to use heirlooms to dress up baked beans, hummus, soups, and bean dips, and learn new recipes to showcase some of the beautiful varieties available locally. Each participant will make a jar of bean soup to take and cook at home.
