Heirloom Tomato Chutney

This heirloom tomato chutney is the perfect condiment for grilled vegetables, fish, or meat or simply spread on a cracker with cheese.


⅔ cup champagne vinegar
1 cup apple cider vinegar
½  cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
½ teaspoon red chili flakes
1 ½ pounds heirloom tomatoes, chopped
1 ½ pounds sweet peppers, finely chopped
¾  cup shallot, minced
4 garlic cloves, minced


  1. In a heavy bottomed saucepan, bring vinegars to a boil with the sugar, salt, mustard seeds, pepper, and chili flakes.
  2. Stir in the tomato, peppers, shallots and garlic. Simmer mixture very slowly, uncovered, stirring frequently, until mixture is reduced and looks glossy and thick, about 1 1/2 hours. Store in the refrigerator.
