Heirloom Caprese Salad


1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved

2 pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, cut into thin slices

Olive oil

Sea salt

8 ounces buffalo mozzarella or fresh mozzarella, room temperature torn into pieces

Fresh ground pepper

Fresh basil leaves, torn if large

Good quality balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze


  1. Toss cherry tomatoes with 1 tablespoon oil in a small bowl; season with salt.
  2. Arrange tomato slices on a platter, slightly overlapping; season generously with salt. Arrange mozzarella over tomatoes; lightly season mozzarella with salt.
  3. Spoon cherry tomatoes over salad and drizzle with oil; season with pepper. Let stand 30 minutes to let flavors meld and release juices from tomatoes and mozzarella.
  4. Top salad with torn basil leaves and additional salt and oil, if desired. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar or glaze.
