Amish Mashed Turnips


2 cups of turnips
1/3 cup of breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup milk
salt & pepper
butter & xtra breadcrumbs for topping


  1. Cook 2 cups of turnips, then mash and add 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 egg, 2 tbsp. brown sugar, 1 cup milk, salt and pepper.
  2. Mix and pour into a greased baking dish, dot with butter and top with breadcrumbs, and bake at 375º for 45 minutes.
  3. Substitute rice or soymilk if you prefer, or try without the egg.
  4. Get creative! Add other veggies and your favorite seasonings and start a new family specialty!
