In this hands-on class for beginners, we will cover all the need-to-know basics of growing food in small spaces. We will cover proper soil, water, sunlight exposure, seasonality of plants, and create a customized garden plan for your space. A majority of class will be outside learning through experience.

Better Knife skills will improve your cooking beyond measure. There’s so much more than just slicing and dicing, and with proper knife techniques, prepping will be easier and quicker. In this hands on class, you’ll learn the basics, plus simple and beautiful garnishes. Learn how to choose a good knife without spending a fortune, and how to keep your knives sharp and well cared for. You’ll leave with recipes and a bounty of chopped produce ready to turn into dinners for the week. Please bring a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a cutting board to class.

Garden and art activities can help children manage their big feelings and fears. In this class, adults will learn how to teach children that the garden is a safe and welcoming place where they can leave their stress behind. You will learn to teach resiliency skills, stress management skills, and self-soothing techniques that empower children and help them express themselves. You will leave with practical ideas that can help children ages 4 through 17. Recommended for parents, care providers and teachers (adults only). No art or garden experience is necessary.

Learn how to bring medicinal plants into your everyday life to promote overall wellness and address minor illnesses and injuries. We will discuss the healing properties of several common herbs, and how to incorporate them through cooking, everyday herbal tonics and simple home remedies to use when ailments arise.

This class is rescheduled for Saturday, October 12. There are many new scientific breakthroughs on keeping our brains healthy. It has been found that watching television and electronic devices can lower the brain activity by 25%. Also, lack of healthy fats in the diet can be detrimental to the brain as well. Sleep stimulates what is known as the “glymphatic system” which is the cleansing mechanism of the brain while sleeping. We will discuss how to optimize your brain health and share recipes of foods and herbs and games that support brain function.

Visit our organic plant sale to fill your garden with vegetable starts, edible perennials, medicinal and culinary herbs, succulents and flowers which will provide beauty and food through the fall and winter. All plants are organically grown with love, and selected for the Sacramento area. We will also have a limited quantity of fruit trees for sale.

Come to our monthly Produce with a Purpose class to learn the super-powers of fruit and veggies (for resisting cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more), enjoy a cooking demo and tasting, and boost your wellness. Take home a goodie bag of locally-grown, farm-fresh, organic produce, too. This month’s theme is breakfast of champions. We’ll try a couple of recipes that are packed with nutrients and anti-oxidants some real power, but also taste great and are so easy to make, you barely have to be awake.

This class is cancelled due to low enrollment. Check out Kate’s next cooking class, Garden to Pantry: Jammin’ on August 15. With loads of soluble fiber and lots of good vitamins and minerals, rice is one of the world’s oldest and most nutritious grains. In this hands-on class, we’ll get to know a wide array of rice varieties and how to use them in everyday cooking. First, we’ll sample an assortment of long and short grain varieties, white and brown, and a few of the more exotic types like red rice and forbidden rice (the “Superfood” of rice). An understanding of the subtle differences in flavor will allow us to begin exploring ways to cook and eat these different varieties. Flavorful addition of spices and vegetables will launch us into world of different rice dishes including a risotto, Forbidden Rice salad, and dolmas.
