You will take home one finished glass globe gleaming with succulents and treasures.

Soil Born Farms Speaker Series: Organic Farming Legends. The Farming Life: An Intimate Ecology. Wendy Johnson, author of Gardening at the Dragon’s Gate, is a Buddhist meditation teacher and organic gardening mentor who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. As one of the founders of the organic farming program at Green Gulch Farm ZenCenter, Wendy has been teaching organic agriculture and meditation for decades. 11am to 12pm in the Schoolhouse. Space is limited. Please register in advance to reserve a seat. $13 suggested donation, proceeds benefit the American River Ranch Restoration & Development Project. 12pm Join Wendy for a ceremonial fruit tree planting and blessing for our newyouth garden orchard. Everyone welcome. 10:30am and from 1 to 2pm Wendy will be signing her book Gardening at the Dragon’s Gatenear the Farmstand.

In this hands on class, you’ll learn the basics, plus simple and beautiful garnishes. Learn how to choose a good knife without spending a fortune, and how to keep your knives sharp and well cared for. You’ll leave with recipes and a bounty of chopped produce ready to turn into dinners for the week. Please bring a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a cutting board to class.

We will discuss preparations to be kept on hand for minor injuries and illnesses, learn to create home and travel first aid kits, and identify first aid plants you may find in the wilderness. We will make herbal preparations in class to get you started on your kit.

This month’s theme is container garden cuisine: What can you grow in pots, on your patio and in small spaces to add to your fresh healthy diet? Not everyone can farm their food, but on the other hand, we know freshness counts for flavor and nutritional value. Let’s see what can we do that’s easy, small scale and yummy.
