Rancho Cordova is getting back to our agricultural roots in partnership with Soil Born Farm connecting our kids to gardens at their schools and giving all of our residents access to fresh local food and fresh knowledge about urban agriculture.

When I tell people I'm happy to donate to Soil Born, people often ask me why they should give money to a farm. The reason is that Soil Born is much more than and different from most farms. As a non-profit organization, Soil Born depends on community support. Much of what is grown at Soil Born is distributed free to those without access to fresh, healthy food. In the spirit of cooperation#many people joining together to make something bigger happen than any of them could do on their own# hope you'll consider joining me to support the revolution that is changing the food landscape in Sacramento and that Soil Born is leading.

Our involvement with Soil Born Farms stems not only from our appreciation of their beautiful organic produce, but from their vital mission as well. Many of us underestimate the importance of good food in our lives, that how what we eat determines how we look, feel, function, our mental acuity and our stamina#all the aspects that make us what we are. The many classes SBF offers includes education for all ages: children, teens, and adults. Soil Born Farms has been a leader in the effort to increase access to fresh locally-grown foods in the Sacramento region. They have been a valuable and key partner in creating a healthier community in South Sacramento as part of our Sacramento Building Healthy Communities Initiative.

Apprenticeship is an opportunity to hone in on specific concepts such as pasture rotation, handling and packing of vegetables, orchard pruning, drip irrigation, working with volunteers, and organic certification requirements. The multi-faceted structure provides a baseline for seeing beyond the borders of just “farm work,” and brings in the aspects of community engagement and social enterprise to our apprenticeship.
